Know Your Skin Type
Knowing what skin type you have is important. It will assist you in determining
which products will be most suitable to use as well as what the best skin
care routine will be for great results. It’s as simple as that …
Normal Skin
Characteristics are:
- The skin is well balanced and is neither oily nor dry.
- Even textured and rarely suffers from blemishes.
- Looks smooth, healthy and clear.
How to look after normal skin:
- Keep it clean - wash twice daily with a good quality face wash.
- Moisturise with a light moisturiser at least once a day.
- Use a gentle facial scrub once or twice a week to maintain the healthy
balance.
Oily Skin
Characteristics are:
- Greasy and shiny appearance especially in the T-zone area (forehead,
nose and chin)
- Prone to blackheads, pimples and blemishes.
- Pores are often medium to large in size and can become clogged with
dirt.
- Skin looks dull and patchy
How to look after oily skin:
- Keep it very clean - wash twice daily with a good quality face wash.
- Use a toner twice a day to help refresh and balance your skin.
- Moisturise at least once a day with an oil free moisturiser that will
leave the skin matt – Yes, you do need to moisturise! Sometimes
your skin will produce excess oil if it is dehydrated to compensate for
the lack of moisture.
- Exfoliate once or twice a week with a facial scrub, for a good deep
down clean.
- Use a clay mask once a week. It will help absorb that excess oil and
remove the unwanted dirt from your pores. Over time it may also help
to reduce the appearance of large pores, as it helps to remove the blockages
that make the pores appear larger.
Dry Skin
Characteristics of dry skin are:
- Looks red and patchy.
- Feels tight and sometimes sore, especially in winter.
- Fine texture with no visible pores and sometimes flakiness.
How to look after dry skin:
- Wash with a gentle cleanser twice daily, normally morning and before
bed.
- Use a good Moisturiser after washing. One with SPF protection is recommended
if you are outside a lot.
- Use a gently face scrub once a week to help promote the production
of oil and to remove dead skin cells. Don't rub to hard or for too long.
- A night cream will assist the skin to try and repair itself while you
sleep.
- Use a hydrating mask once a week.
- Drink plenty of water!
Combination Skin (The most common type)
Characteristics of combination skin:
- Shows signs of both oily skin and dry skin on areas of your face.
How to look after combination skin:
- The best practice is to use different products on the different areas
of your face depending on the problem.
- Avoid 'drying' products that will be too harsh on your skin, as well
as products that are too 'greasy' and not suited for the oily areas.
- Use a gentle cleanser on the dry areas and a refreshing toner on the
oily areas.
Sensitive Skin:
Characteristics of sensitive skin are:
- Appears red and patchy.
- React to weather conditions and many skincare products.
- The cheek area can look very red with broken capillaries (small red
veins).
- Can also be flaky and dry.
How to look after sensitive skin:
- Use products which do not contain alcohol, harsh chemicals and are
not perfumed.
- Avoid soap as it can be quite a drying product. Rather opt for products
developed for sensitive skin.
- Use a gentle face wash twice daily.
- Moisturise after washing.
Pay attention to the products you buy. Try to do a small patch test
first before applying it all over your face.
